Who Mourns for the
Hangman?
by S.A. Bolich
John
Barton is better known as Scraggy, the hangman. He travels from town to
town, doing a job that others don’t want to do. A deal with a witch
ensures that his rope will always recognize a sinner. “Young James” is
clearly a sinner, as the glow from his rope indicates, but what will
this sinner show Scraggy about himself?
WHO MOURNS FOR THE HANGMAN? is a short but startling, powerful tale.
S.A. Bolich reaches deep into the heart of Scraggy to evoke the
reader’s sympathy. We stand side by side with this solitary figure as
he faces perhaps the greatest challenge of his entire life. I’m
impressed by the character development as S.A. Bolich brings even
secondary characters to vivid life, creating a tale that is lush and
vivid.
S.A. Bolich also does a marvelous job at depicting the time period. The
dialogue is historically accurate without leaving the reader struggling
to comprehend just what is being said. Instead, we are drawn back into
a time in which the hangman plays a vital but horrific role in meting
out justice. The touch of the paranormal adds to the eerie atmosphere
as WHO MOURNS FOR THE HANGMAN? is nothing short of superb.
