Sunrise in a Garden
of Love and Evil
by Barbara Monajem

Vampire
Ophelia Beliveau is mad! Someone has maliciously destroyed her garden
and she suspects her neighbor, Willy Wyler. All she wants is for the
police to come and scare him just a little bit, but she isn’t prepared
for the relentless nature of Gideon O’Toole. Unfortunately, more is
going on in the small town of Bayou Gavette than meets the eye and
Ophelia is right in the middle of it all. Gideon is drawn to Ophelia
but is it just her vampiric nature that attracts him?
SUNRISE IN A GARDEN OF LOVE AND EVIL is a surprising departure from the
standard vampire romance. Ophelia’s vampirism isn’t the total focus of
the story but rather it is the spirit of Bayou Gavette that sets the
overall tone. The romance is merged nicely into the storyline, making
it seem a natural outcome rather than being forced.
Barbara Monajem’s darkly alluring tale takes readers into the heart of
the bayou to show what lurks just beneath the surface. From the
mob-like figures of Leopard and Constance Dufray to the vampire clubs
such as Blood and Velvet, Bayou Gavette hides secrets beneath its
surface. Atmosphere is critical to the success of SUNRISE IN A GARDEN
OF LOVE AND EVIL and Barbara Monajem does a marvelous job at weaving it
in between the dialogue. A bit more descriptive detail would have
accentuated the eerie, almost haunting ambiance as the story uses
mainly dialogue to show readers the world in which Ophelia and Gideon
reside.
