Horsemen of the
Apocalypse Book 2: Rage
by Jackie Morse
Kessler
What
if you could only control one thing…the blade?
Missy Miller’s humiliation is complete and so she turns to the only
outlet she knows. She cuts, but this time it is different. This time
she meets the Angel of Death and becomes War, one of the Four Horsemen
of the Apocalypse.
RAGE is a dark and gritty tale that tackles a very serious topic- the
issue of self-injury. Jackie Morse Kessler does a magnificent job at
incorporating this sensitive subject into an imaginative fantasy while
keeping the storyline grounded in a world with which teenagers will
easily relate. The emotional turmoil Missy experiences permeates every
page, making her inner struggle to find her own peace and sense of
balance all the more realistic.
Missy’s emotional pain often seems overwhelming. Jackie Morse Kessler
depicts her hopelessness quite well, almost too well as I wondered how
on earth she would find a resolution. Part of the beauty of this series
is that the author doesn’t paint unrealistic conclusions and RAGE does
not disappoint. As with HUNGER, the Author’s Note adds to the context
of the storyline and offers resources for those struggling with self-
injury.
RAGE shines a light on an often secret subject, offering an excellent
opportunity for discussion. It is not an easy story to read as the
intensity level is quite high, but the overall impact is nothing short
of stunning. What a powerful tale!
