The Death Cure
The Death Cure by James Dashner
by James Dashner

** Please note that this review may contain spoilers for the first two books in the series**

THE DEATH CURE starts off right where THE SCORCH TRIALS ended. Thomas is in isolation, worried about the fate of his friends and bored out of his mind. Are his friends, his fellow Gladers, still alive? Worse yet, has the Flare taken root in any of them? Thomas is going to have to reunite with his friends and discover just what WICKED has planned. Will he survive? Only time will tell who lives and who dies in this concluding book….

THE DEATH CURE is not a stand alone tale as James Dashner doesn’t waste any time on back history. Instead, one should read THE MAZE RUNNER and THE SCORCH TRIALS prior to reading THE DEATH CURE so that all the pieces of the puzzle will make sense.  Thomas and his friends have been through a variety of trials, also called variables in the storyline, and now the culmination of everything is at hand.

THE DEATH CURE offers readers their first glimpse of the world outside of the various trials.  Each book has gotten increasingly darker in tone and this book is the darkest yet. Thomas and his friends are faced with further betrayals, misdirection, and even worse- the loss of hope. Expect the unexpected- as no one is safe from the machinations of WICKED. James Dashner does a phenomenal job at creating mistrust between his characters and conveying that sense of treachery and betrayal to his readers.

It has been a mad dash to the finish and now Thomas and his friends find their answers. Readers will be left with almost as many questions as answers as there are still so many intriguing possibilities left up to the imagination. I’m looking forward to the recently announced prequel to the series as James Dashner has crafted a world I’m not quite ready to let go. Bravo!
