Always the Vampire
by Nancy Haddock
Francesca
“Cesca” Marinelli has her hands full with planning the wedding of her
best friend/landlord, Maggie O’Halloran. Unfortunately, as the Oldest
City’s only vampire, she is constantly drawn into the drama of the
supernatural community. This time, however, it’s personal as the Void
(see LAST VAMPIRE STANDING for more details) has now infected her love,
Deke Saber. Cesca, Saber, Triton, and Cosmil will have to team up with
others if they hope to stop the Void. Will Cesca lose everyone she
loves, just as her life seems to be settling down?
ALWAYS THE VAMPIRE is the third book in the Oldest City Vampire series.
While it can be read as a stand alone thanks to the background
information provided by Nancy Haddock in the tale, ALWAYS THE VAMPIRE
is best appreciated within the context of the series as a whole. In
fact, it is somewhat a coming of age tale for Cesca as she has to learn
to embrace her vampire powers if she hopes to survive and save her
loved ones.
Part of the appeal of the Oldest City Vampire series is the light
hearted humor that Nancy Haddock infuses into her storylines. After
all, how often do we have vampires who surf? ALWAYS THE VAMPIRE is a
bit more serious than the two previous books as the story arc is being
completed. Nancy Haddock expands the parameters of her world quite a
bit in this installment as we learn more about the various supernatural
entities and governing bodies as well as the relationships within them.
The humor is still present, but the various intrigues are beginning to
take center stage.
ALWAYS THE VAMPIRE is yet another entertaining read from Nancy Haddock.
It will be interesting to see how Cesca handles the changes in her life
after this installment and I am eagerly looking forward to the next
book already. Bravo!
