Laura Lippman explores the inner world of absence and loss in the characters upon the disappearance the father.  Through the lives of those around him, the absent father become more and more present within the mystery.  As the novel unfolds, the reader is drawn deeper and deeper into the inner emotional lives of the mother, mistress and daughters.  The reader easily feels the effects of the absence of the father in the heart and in the change in status of the characters.  The Baltimore detective Sandy Sanchez's hunt for answers leads him deeper and deeper into the motivations of the characters and their relationships with each other.  AFTER I'M GONE is a mystery with an emotional punch that grabs the imagination.

With each mystery I read by Laura Lippmann, I find her becoming one of my favorite mystery writers because her mysteries always add something new to the mystery genre format.  AFTER I'M GONE takes the reader into the depths of the character's lives in the midst of a truly puzzling mystery.  The mystery itself is quite compelling, especially the resolution.  Just when I thought, I had solved the mystery, several exciting twists gave such a delight to the ending.  All the twists arose organically from the careful earlier preparation of the characters and the present events so the twists did not feel manufactured or too rushed.  Often a reader feels a let down when a novel ends and all is over.  AFTER I'M GONE left me the reader with a feeling of satisfaction and wholeness when the mystery ended -- all has been resolved.  The resolution unravels the mystery but one also feels an emotional resolution on a deeper level.  Even then, Laura Lippman leaves the reader with one more wonderful surprise.

If you are a mystery lover and want something more out of your mysteries than the typical fare, I highly recommend Laura Lippman, either the Tess Monaghan series or those outside of the series, like AFTER I'M GONE.
